Liberty, challenging behaviour and the duty of care

One of the most common issues I meet in training care providers relates to challenging behaviour and the use of behavioural management regimes. Many people are confused about the impact of recent legislation around liberty and personal freedom on the techniques they have used for decades to manage difficult behaviours. It seems as though what works has now become illegal in UK.

The British National Party: Genuine change or just more of the same old faulty thinking?

It is true that the BNP has enjoyed some limited success of late but that is more to do with dissatisfaction at the behaviour of other parties. Since the heady days of electoral success people have had a chance to hear the arguments and even to see Mr. Griffin demonstrate his own lack of understanding on BBC TV’s Question Time. There cannot be many people left in UK who do not see through the thinly veiled racism of this odious party. To believe otherwise is the biggest thinking error of them all.

How to be happy

I realised just how many people in our society seem to have forgotten how to be happy. It’s as though this basic, fundamental and vital skill has all but disappeared under a mountain of worries, expenses and appointments.

Ashleigh Ewing and Ron Dixon: Beauty and the beast?

This is not to suggest that all mentally disordered offenders should be locked away for the rest of their lives. Anyone who knows me will also know that I’m a consistent advocate for the rights of mentally ill people, including the right to liberty but there has to be a sense of proportion. In extreme cases such as this society really does have a right and a duty to protect itself.
